At the recent April 8th Limon Fire Board meeting, the board welcomed Mike Vaughn, a representative from Stockman’s Bank, which has recently relocated to Hugo. Vaughn provided updated information regarding certificate of deposit (CD) interest rates. To ensure the department is receiving the most favorable rates, board members agreed to review their current CD rates and consider any potential changes. This discussion aimed to clarify financial responsibilities and keep the department’s investments secure and productive.
Transitioning from financial topics, the board reviewed ongoing maintenance projects. The department is in the process of painting its buildings, with the modular training building scheduled as the next area to be painted. However, before proceeding, board members decided to pause the painting project to investigate the possibility of installing new siding. Upgrading the siding could provide long-term benefits, so painting will be postponed until further evaluation of siding options is complete.
Several community events and training opportunities were discussed during the meeting. Seven fire department members will be attending “Fire on the Plains” in La Junta, which is a regional training event designed to enhance firefighting skills, promote safety, and foster collaboration among departments. The department assisted with the annual Town of Limon Easter Egg Hunt taking the tower truck down to the event.
The department is also planning its annual Fireman’s Dance, scheduled for June 6th from 7:30 PM to midnight. This popular community event serves as both a fundraiser and an opportunity to bring residents together. Entertainment will be provided by Rhett Haney, a musician who was well-received at last year’s dance.
Looking ahead to Independence Day, the board discussed plans for the July 4th fireworks celebration. While preparations are underway, there are ongoing conversations about a backup plan (“Plan B”) in case weather conditions remain dry and insufficient moisture falls, which could affect fire safety and the ability to proceed with fireworks.
On the operational front, the department responded to 29 calls within the past month. The addition of a new Chaplain has been a significant asset; she has played an instrumental role in helping the department acquire new lift equipment, which improves patient care during emergency responses. The Chaplain’s support has also boosted morale and provided valuable assistance to both personnel and community members.
Volunteer fire member Chris Mogon has taken over leadership of the department’s cadet program, which offers local youth an opportunity to learn about firefighting and community service. Mogon is committed to growing the program and engaging more cadets in department activities.
Finally, the board addressed administrative issues, including the ongoing search for legal representation. The department is considering hiring a new attorney to minimize the risk of conflicts of interest in the event legal advice or action is needed. This proactive approach aims to ensure the department’s interests are protected in any future incidents requiring legal involvement.
