The Lady Badgers continue to demonstrate notable progress this season, even while facing strong competition and fielding a predominantly young roster. Their recent matchups against Stratton and ECA Eagles showcased both their ongoing development and relentless team spirit.
The Lady Badgers met a formidable opponent in the Stratton Eagles on Friday night, February 20. The opening quarter proved challenging, with the Badgers struggling offensively and managing only 2 points, both courtesy of Addison Pedersen. Stratton’s aggressive defense limited scoring opportunities for the Badgers, while the Eagles capitalized early, putting up 13 points.
The Badgers found a bit more rhythm in the second quarter. Pedersen and Chloe Stone each contributed baskets, and Molly Winstoer added a point from the free-throw line, raising the team’s tally by 5 points for the period. Despite these efforts, Stratton’s offense remained dominant, accumulating 18 points and establishing a commanding 31-7 lead at halftime.
After the break, the Lady Badgers returned with renewed energy. Paige Denne sank a three-pointer, while Malcom, Richardson, and Kollath each found the basket, combining for 9 points in the quarter. However, the Eagles maintained their offensive pressure, adding 12 points and continuing to challenge the Badger defense.
In the final period, the Lady Badgers displayed their determination. Denne hit another three-pointer and a basket, while Tenley Willinger contributed at the free-throw line. The Badgers added 6 points to their total, ending the game with 20. Stratton closed out the contest with 10 additional points, securing a 55-20 victory. Although the score was lopsided, it did not reflect the Badgers’ persistence in breaking the press and improving ball control, as they committed fewer turnovers than in previous games.
Saturday February 21 afternoon game brought another test as the Lady Badgers faced the ECA Eagles. Kinley Mellott and Braelyn Malcom combined for 7 points to start the game strong. However, ECA’s offense was efficient, hitting two three-pointers, multiple baskets, and converting 75% of their free throws for a 20-point first quarter.
The Badgers increased their trips to the free-throw line in the second quarter. Sydney Richardson made three of four free throws, while Pedersen added a basket, totaling 5 points. The Badger defense worked tirelessly, but ECA’s height advantage contributed to 16 points for the Eagles. At halftime, ECA led 36-12.
The third period saw the Lady Badgers play with a “let the chips fall” attitude. Malcom took charge, scoring three baskets, both her free throws, and a three-pointer. Audra Kollath and Mariah Ravenkamp added baskets, helping the Badgers to amass 15 points in the quarter. The young Badger defense limited ECA to 11 points, showcasing their grit and strong defense.
The pace slowed in the final quarter. Stone scored 3 points for the Badgers. Despite their lead, ECA kept their varsity players on the court and added 12 points. The game concluded with a 60-30 loss for the Badgers. Nevertheless, this contest was a testament to the Badgers’ growth and teamwork throughout the season.
The Lady Badgers’ recent performances highlight their development and resilience. As they prepare to travel to Marino on Wednesday, February 25, they look to build on these experiences. The upcoming game will lead into the tournament in Akron on Friday and Saturday. With their current RPI ranking at 43rd, the Badgers will need some help to qualify for the regional tournament, but their progress this season sets a strong foundation for the future.
