Basketball fans were treated to a pair of exciting contests as the Limon Badgers faced off against the Stratton Eagles and the ECA (Evangelical Christian Academy) Eagles over the weekend. The Limon Badgers, known for their disciplined play and tough defense, feature standout players such as Brody Scherrer, Drey Tacha, Keagan Mellott, and Aiden Kollath. Their opponents, the Stratton Eagles, are recognized for their outside shooting and fast-paced play, while the ECA Eagles boast several sharpshooters who can change a game from beyond the arc.

The much-anticipated contest between Limon and Stratton on Friday February 20th was expected to be a close test—and it quickly lived up to expectations. From the opening tip, both teams played at a blistering pace, trading baskets and showcasing impressive ball movement. Limon’s offense found contributions from Brody Scherrer, Daniel Forristall, John Bee, and Keagan Mellott, while Stratton kept pace with strong outside shooting, draining three three-pointers compared to Limon’s one. By the end of the first quarter, the score was tied at 15, setting the stage for a nail-biter.

The second quarter saw both teams heating up from long range. For Limon, Camdyn Tacha and Aiden Kollath connected from beyond the arc, while Drey Tacha was steady from the free-throw line. Brody Scherrer and Mellott continued to find the basket, helping the Badgers tally 12 points in the quarter. Stratton responded in kind, matching Limon’s total with 12 points of their own, ensuring the game remained deadlocked at 27 by halftime.

Coming out of the break, both squads lit up the scoreboard with a barrage of three-pointers. For Limon, Drey Tacha, Brody Scherrer, and Jacob Jaklich each hit from deep, while Stratton answered with four triples of their own. Limon’s scoring was rounded out by baskets from Drey Tacha, Jaklich, and Mellott, plus clutch free throws from Camdyn Tacha and Kollath. The Badgers’ defense stepped up, forcing turnovers and contesting shots, which limited the Eagles to 18 points compared to Limon’s 20. Heading into the final period, the Badgers held a slim lead.

The game’s final moments were as tense as they came. Brody Scherrer knocked down two critical three-pointers, while John Bee and Mellott added baskets for the Badgers. Free throws by Kollath and Mellott padded the total to 13 points for Limon in the quarter. Stratton’s shooters stayed hot, making two threes, three baskets, and two free throws for 14 points. With seconds remaining, the outcome hung in the balance. Limon’s smart clock management and tough defense forced crucial turnovers, allowing the Badgers to take possession with just 1.1 seconds left, up by one point. All they needed was to hold the ball and let the clock expire, clinching a dramatic 60-59 victory.

On Saturday February 21, the Badgers faced the ECA Eagles, a team known for their outside shooting prowess. Limon struggled to find their rhythm early, managing just eight points—six of those coming from Keagan Mellott and the rest from Aiden Kollath. ECA capitalized, putting up 15 points including two three-pointers, four baskets, and a free throw to take an early lead.

The momentum shifted in the second quarter as Limon started to click offensively. Thanks to Brooks Scherrer’s spring like athleticism and aggressive defense—which resulted in several turnovers—the Badgers went on a run. Drey Tacha, Brody Scherrer, and Joe White all hit three-pointers, while D. Tacha, Kollath, Brooks Scherrer, and Mellott added baskets. Limon scored 21 points in the period, while their defense held ECA to just nine (all from three-pointers). At halftime, Limon led 29-24.

After the break, Limon continued to build their lead. Brody Scherrer connected from deep again, and Drey Tacha, Aiden Kollath, Brody Scherrer, Daniel Forstall, and Camdyn Tacha all contributed baskets. The Badgers’ defense remained stout, holding ECA to just four points in the quarter. Limon’s balanced attack netted them 15 points for the period.

In the final quarter, Aiden Kollath hit a three-pointer, and the scoring was spread out among Brooks Scherrer, Brody Scherrer, Joe White, John Bee, and Jacob Jaklitsch, totaling 13 points. While Limon had a few defensive lapses, leading to fouls and free throws for ECA, the Eagles could only narrow the gap slightly. The Badgers’ comfortable lead allowed them to give some of their younger players valuable court time. Limon closed out the game with a 57-38 victory.

The Badgers will host Akron on Tuesday, February 24, starting at 4:30 PM with the C team, followed by JV and Varsity matchups. This game will serve as a pigtail game for the Akron tournament, which takes place that Friday and Saturday in Akron. With their current momentum and strong team chemistry, the Badgers look poised for continued success as they head into this crucial stretch of their season.
